Rikshaw Design boho Trunk Show

So excited tonight and Saturday, I am hosting a Rikshaw Design boho trunk show with my sweet friend Lynley.  She got the big box of samples delivered yesterday and said everything is amazing.  I have been making jewelry for this show tonight,  my show in North Carolina on the 10th and then my samples for the Atlanta Gift Show, so it has been a little busy in my factory.   For my local peeps, come by if you are in town!

See you soon!

Beautiful Bookshelves

Not only do I think filling up bookshelves are an amazing way to show your decorating skills, but if you are a serious reader like myself, you need a place to keep your library of books!  I keep all the books that I have read and they are in every room of my home.  The best bookshelf styling is when you add personal mementos and pictures in with the books, telling a story.

Since my apartment is crammed with books, I have vowed not to buy any more books for a while, except coffee table books for stacking my tvs on.  I am all about my Kindle!

Beautiful Day Release

So today is the day that all Elin Hildebrand fans have been waiting for all year..the release of her new book, Beautiful Day.  She only publishes one book a year, so once you have read them all, it seems like it takes forever for a new one to come on the market.  A few months ago, she blew through town on her way down to the Keys and did a quick book reading at Books and Books in Coral Gables.  Unfortunately, they did not promote it enough and only a few die hards showed up, but it was great because we all got to chat with her.  She told us about the book and all sorts of tidbits.  She is signing books at Mitchell’s Book Corner from 10-12 today and at the Hampshire House/Cheers in Boston tonight from 6-8pm. So jealous of my Boston friends who are in town and can go!
Set on Nantucket like all of her books, this story is about two families and a wedding taking place.  The Mother of the Bride had passed and left a big book of notes and letters for the family she left behind.  A big part of the book is about her daughter’s wedding, about which she had many thoughts and opinions.  Elin read several of these letters at her reading and they were so descriptive and heart warming.  I can’t wait to read this book.

My other favorite Elin Hildebrand books are:

Silver Girl
The Castaways
and of course, Blue Bistro.  All great beach reads.  After you have read them, if you have not visited Nantucket, you will be booking your flight asap.

Happy Reading!

Toile De Jouy

Toile de Jouy

Definition:  an 18th century French scenic pattern usually printed on cotton, linen or silk in one color on a light ground; broadly :a similar printed fabric

Origin:  French, literally, cloth of Jouy, from Jouy-en-Josas, France.  First known use: circa 1920.

Basic examples of Toile de Jouy “toile”are below:

Most toile designs tell a story, lots of people and animals..

New York City Toile as painted by Paige Smith in the dressing room of the New York Lilly Pulitzer store.

The Lilly Pulitzer Philadelphia store…
One company called Town Toiles has come out with custom toiles for a few popular vacation spots.  They have products available on their website..very cute.  Nantucket is the green and pink above and Boston is the blue one below.
Toile became very popular around 2000 and it became a little over done in my opinion.  There are some beautiful examples of toile out there..here are a few…
I have been on the hunt for a blue and white toile for my bedroom but all the ones I find are cream and blue.  This one just popped up the other day and it might be what I end up with..Scalamandre Ouistiti-it would definitely work with my plan.

I might hit up some fabric stores on my road trip in a couple of weeks, you never know what you can find off the beaten path!

Stalking Lilly Pulitzer

Today is the first official day of Summer!  And…it is National Wear Your Lilly Day.  I am failing on that end since I am channeling Jackie Kennedy today in my black short sleeve t-shirt, white jeans and sandals.
I have been following on Instagram Lilly Pulitzer and Paige Smith, my favorite Lilly print designer as they document their photo shoot here in Miami.  They are staying at a Miami Beach hotel and I am really not above a little stalking.   Some people would go stalking for a movie star sighting..I would embarrass myself for a Lilly Pulitzer spying mission.

My countdown is dwindling for my big trip…17 days till I get on the road!
Very excited and scared at the same time.
Will keep you posted…

The Perfect Summer Tan…

It always kills me that something that makes you feel so good is so bad for you.  I always love getting a good tan during the summer.  Since I live in Miami, there isn’t any excuse to not have a tan all year-round, but it is time consuming to build up a real tan.  My genetic make-up is 25$ Greek and 25% Italian, so I should be practically bronze but it isn’t so.  But, once I break through the pale/tan barrier, I can get a nice tan and keep it for a long time.  My 2008 summer tan went down in the record books..a whole summer spent in Newport, sitting on Gooseberry Beach looking at the ocean from the most beautiful place.
To kickstart a tan or to fudge one when you can’t get in the sun, the easiest way is self-tanner.  My Newport roommate insisted on using Jurgens Natural Glow all summer to supplement her tanning and I could not stand the smell.  It drove me crazy.  I discovered that if you buy the small tubes and use them right away, the smell isn’t so bad.  Then, they came out with one that has practically no smell..a miracle.
Jergens Natural Glow
This is effective but if you over-do it, you can look like Snooki..and that is a bad thing.  This is available in every drug store in America.

Clarins Self-Taning Instant Gel
This one is good but a little pricier, around $40.

Lavera Tanning Lotion
This brand used to be sold at Target and it is a little earthy/crunchier version, but all natural.  Now it is available on their website and some Wegman’s in New York.  This is my favorite.

bare Minerals Faux Face Tan Gradual Glow Sunless Tanner
Better than the real thing, this quick-drying sunless tanner by bareMinerals gives you a sun-kissed complexion without exposure to the sun’s harmful rays. A unique tanning peptide delivers a subtle, golden glow that gradually develops into a natural-looking tan over time. A mineral copper complex works to prolong the effects, while plant-derived emollients help lock in moisture without clogging pores for a healthy-looking complexion. Build a deeper tan by reapplying – and look like you’ve basked in the sun longer. Formulated without parabens and artificial oils.
Available at Ulta  $24.

Clinique Self Sun Face Tanning Lotion
For immediate color, this lotion is oil-free and delivers a nice tan in 3 hours
Available at Lord & Taylor $22

Did I miss your favorite?
Let me know!
My goal is not to need these this summer by the way….

Favorite Summer Treat

Since I am currently back on not eating carbs, I find myself thinking about bread and crackers all the time..so sad.  On my recent trip to Nantucket, I decided to eat like a normal person for the weekend so as soon as we got off the ferry, we headed out to Bartlett Farms to stock up on some yummy food.  It was so fun.

As soon as we walked in, we got hit up by this sweet lady with an apron on, sampling the most delicious treat.  Marscapone cheese and Beach Plum jelly on a cracker.  Sounds simple, but it is amazing.  We bought all the parts right away and spent the whole weekend snacking on these three ingredients until the crackers were gone.

Fast forward to this week and I purchased some Marscapone cheese (basically Italian sweet cream cheese).  There isn’t much I can put it on that is on my diet except celery.  So, I decided to really do some research, and after spending 30 minutes in the cracker aisle comparing data, found that Carr’s Water Crackers had the least amount of carbs of all the selection there.  Match that with no-carb Marscapone cheese and no-sugar red raspberry preserves and I have almost recreated my Nantucket treat…kind of missing the Beach Plum jelly though.

Try this and I promise you will love…

Muche et Muchette Tote..favorite summer find so far

On my recent trip, I found this amazing straw tote with sparkly straps from Muche et Muchette.  It was $45 and I thought, what a bargain.  After my purchase, I emailed the info to my online investigator Brooke, and she emailed me right back with an ebay link to the same tote for $33.15 with free shipping.  I had walked too far at that point to return my pricey tote but thought it was worth a share.  Super cute for the summer.

Also comes in turquoise, natural and dark brown.
Click here for the eBay link.

On other fronts, the Nantucket store that purchased all my crystal bracelets reordered 52 of them, so that is what I did all weekend long!  I am almost done..very exciting stuff.

Pink Perfection in Traditional Home

I am loving this month’s Traditional Home.  When it hit my mailbox, I couldn’t believe the pillows on the front cover because they are almost identical to the ones that are in my living room, recently purchased to freshen things up.  This Palm Beach home is so beautiful and packed with lots of pink, green and orange.  The owner is a designer and created a stunning comfortable home with lots of personality.  I love that the house is painted a color called “Ballet Slippers”.
I die over this white sofa with hot pink piping.  The Brunschwig and Fils toile is also a favorite.

Every detail is keeping with the color palette she chose.

Amazing upholstered headboards…

I love this scalloped side table…

Love the Mackenzie Childs chandelier…

The Manuel Canovas print is to die for…

Homeowner and designer Robin Weiss.
She has amazing taste!
