Making Lists on Vacation

Nothing like being on vacation with nothing to do when your brain can’t stop thinking about all you have to do when you get home.  My kitchen plan is well in the works but I have hit some road bumps along the way.  One of my issues is that I have to pack up my entire kitchen before they demo the existing and leave time for them to paint, patch and whatever else needs to be done. That means that I will be living with piles of boxes and plastic bins filled with everything in my kitchen.  This gives me hives.  I don’t necessarily have a contractor yet confirmed and I know there are things I am not thinking of that are going to pop up and throw me off my plan and budget.
Once I pack up the kitchen, the next hurdle is the enormous Ikea cube bookshelf that is quite full of books, papers, business samples and a ton of other stuff.  I need to pack that up as well and find a new home for my bookshelf.  The pink hutch in my kitchen is moving to my dining room.  The pine dresser by my front door is moving to my bedroom, the pine dresser in there is moving out to my living room and the one that is currently there is moving to by my front door.  Everything listed above needs muscles so that is a whole other set of problems.
On a more positive note, I met with my website guru Cara today to discuss my new site and how we can get it up and running FAST.  I am putting together a bunch of stuff for her to load up this week and I am hoping to have it up and running by August 28th.  That is my new goal.  It’s going to be so amazing.
Nantucket is so fun.  The weather is so perfect..not so hot during the day and a little cool at night.  We went out to Madaket last night to see the sunset and have dinner at Millie’s.  The crowd for the sunset watching was intense.  The sun looked like a crazy red/orange fireball.

It slowly slipped down into the water. It was so beautiful.
This is my office this week…
I am working on my current to-do list.  Hopefully I will have it done before I leave for Providence on Monday!!

Headed North

Just when I unpacked from my road trip, I packed up more stuff to head up North to Boston/Nantucket/Providence for 12 days.  I have been looking forward to this trip for months.  We (Newport roommates) rented a house on Nantucket for this whole week and I am so excited to be here with nothing to do but have fun.  Of course, I am working a tiny bit on the side so things don’t get too backed up at my real job.  My old pal Dede picked me up at the airport and we went to lunch..next stop to Tara’s in the North End.  We ventured out for dinner and waited in line at Giacomo’s.

This guy was walking up and down the sidewalk with a tape player serenading everyone with songs…

Tara and I in line…
After dinner, we hit up Mike’s Pastry. What a zoo.  The cannolis were delicious-definitely worth the line.

Saturday, we ran errands and were all over the place but made it to Flat of the Hill right before they closed at 5pm.  I walked in and couldn’t believe my old crystal necklaces were hanging by the register.  They were tucked away and they found them so they put them out.  They looked so cute and sparkly, I think I should start making these again.

Lucky for me, the owner Katherine was there.  She is my most favorite store owner and I got to catch up with her and check out her amazing store..still my favorite ever.

Sunday morning, we packed up all the stuff and headed to the Cape.  We overpacked as usual and I was so worried it wouldn’t all fit in our friends’ Jeep.  Tara, ever patient, was not worried.

We didn’t quite make the ferry we were scheduled on, but we got on the next one with our bags and our Jeep came over a little later.  We headed to Baxter’s to wait around and started the trip with Mimosas.

Tara was in serious travel mode making sure we hadn’t forgotten anything before boarding (notice her awesome See Designs tote with an enormous monogram)…
We made it to the island by 3pm.  The weather is amazing!

This is my room for the week, a window a/c unit and a ceiling fan.  Those two things will make me happy.

We went to Brandt Point Grill for dinner and ended up at Cru for cocktails after.  Such a fun start to our week.

Monday, after a quick brunch, we hit the streets for some shopping. One of my favorite stores on the island is Monelle.  They have a location in Newport as well.  I have never seen a store with so much good stuff….
Lots of good shoes, jewelry, dresses, jeans, tops, tunics, hats, wraps and so much more.  Everything is so cute, I could spend all my money here!

After shopping, I went back to the house to do some work. I got lost along the way and kept stopping to take pictures of all the cute houses I saw…

It’s so beautiful here.
Best vacation spot.
Visit Monelle at their website here.

Atlanta Gift Show

Last Sunday, I got up at the crack of dawn and left Statesville on my way to Atlanta.  As I drove out of driveway of the Stamey’s home, I passed the cows having breakfast…
Arriving in Atlanta around 11:30 am, I headed straight to building 3 of AmericasMart to check in.  I got my credentials and went downstairs to the Cash & Carry jewelry section to hit up two of my favorite vendors.  I do the same exact thing every time I get to this show…

I ended up getting

Soaps from Michel Design Works.
I am in love with these foaming soaps and they make great hostess gifts!

Visited with my pal Meg Carter in her adorable booth…

Ordered more clutches from Brooke Wright Designs…

Picked out lots of earrings from La Vie en Parisienne….

Picked up a new line of bags…

The pink and green ones were a favorite…

Saw my friends and Crab & Cleek..they also had some new tops on display. I ordered the one below for me to “test out”.

Daniel Richards showroom to see what was new.
These are the new designs from Donovan Designs.
Of course, I was dying over them!

Lifeguard Press..the prettiest showroom of course…

Toss Designs..I almost died when I saw their new chinoiserie bag.  I ordered a bunch!

They teamed up with Paige Gemmel and had her amazing designs on some of their products..I got the bags and can’t wait to get them.

I also got these pom pom bags and the rose glitter bags.

One of my favorite things about is Atlanta is that it is a great place to meet in person my internet friends.  Two years ago, I met Paige from the Pink Clutch and in the past have met many bloggers who came to my booth to say hello.  So fun!

One of my last stops was Alexa Pulitzer. I love their notepads and mousepads.  I ordered a bunch to get me through the beginning of Fall.

Bleary eyed, I left around 5:45 and on the way out, spotted Laurie Byrne from LB Originals.  I have been buying her cute paper goods for such a long time.  It was so fun to finally meet her.
Then…I got turned around-easy to do in these enormous place and couldn’t find the street where the garage was where I parked my car.  I clicked on the maps feature on my phone and they had made a notation for me.  I seriously followed with blue dot until I was going in the right direction and finally found my car.

The rest of this day was not so exciting. I could not decide whether to stay in Atlanta or keep driving towards my parents. I finally opted to get on the road and made it to Macon.  My hotel picking luck failed me and I stayed in a very boring not fancy hotel and got Outback take out for dinner.  The next morning, I decided to hit up Waffle House for breakfast. I woke up at 7am, was sitting at Waffle House at 7:13 and was back on the road by 7:31 heading to Amelia Island.  I got there right around lunch and got to hang out with my niece Taylor and my parents-and Maisie.  All in all, a very fun trip!
Overspent in Atlanta,

Charleston Trunk Show

It’s been years since I have visited Charleston and I was so excited to get back there on my road trip two weeks ago.  My pal Grimsley has lived there for years and we put a little show together with some friends.  Once I got there and unloaded my car, we ran some errands.  First stop was Sugar Bakery.  What a cute place!  We got some sweets for later, everything was displayed so adorably…

Next stop, a quick lunch at Burbage’s Market.
I wish we had something like that in Miami!!
Then, back to the house to set up all my stuff.
Our show was from 4-8pm…

I am so mad that I didn’t take more pictures of the actual people!  This always happens to me, I have the best intentions to document and then I get busy and the next thing you know, I am breaking it all down.  I did get this one cute pic.  All the ladies that came to shop were so nice and everyone had fun!
We went out to dinner and Grimsley gave me two choices.  We ended up at one and then found out Shep from Southern Charm was at the other!  Seriously, I am dying to meet him in person.
For this trip, I was so lucky to be able to stay in Gibbon House, the beautiful carriage house behind Stevenson’s home.  It is listed on VRBO here.  It is so comfortable and in a terrific location in Charleston.
Highly recommend!

On Thursday, after breakfast at the famous Hominy Grill, we went for a ride in the golf cart and I got to see so many pretty homes, including Thomas Ravenel’s from Southern Charm.  It was much bigger than it seems on tv. No T-Rav sighting though…
We went to the Battery so Grimsley’s dog Sierra could stretch her legs and we watched her stalk squirrels with serious concentration.  We hit up some stationery shops and then it was time to go…right when I was getting ready to leave, we saw Michael, Patricia Altschul’s butler pull his car around to her front gate.  Soon after, we see her walk out and we waved hello and she waved back and the next thing you know Grimsley is crossing the street and I, who usually doesn’t have a problem talking to anyone, froze up.  I managed to chat with her about the show, her book and II don’t even remember what else and then she posed for a pic with me. What a treat!!!
I had the best time.  I am definitely planning another trip in the fall with some friends.  Grimsley, get ready!!!

Nest stop Statesville, North Carolina to see Meg and her family.  I hadn’t seen them in such a long time.  The girls looked so tall!  Elizabeth lost a tooth right when I arrived.

We went to Blowing Rock one day..so fun in the summer. Lots of people walking around.

We ran into our friend Karen on the street!  What a great surprise…

We had such a fun day..topped off with a quick visit to Kilwin’s. OMG what delicious ice cream

Always a good time in Statesville…next stop Atlanta Gift Show.
Having a fun summer!

Cheating on Newport

No automatic alt text available.
One of the perks of writing a blog is having a reference guide to your life’s activities.  I was trying to remember when an event happened and I fell down the rabbit hole of my own blog.  Reading old posts one after another and I couldn’t stop.  All the pictures from my Newport days bring back so many fun memories.  It is hard to imagine living there for a whole summer like I did in 2008, the summer of my life!
Usually before the summer kicked in, my roommates from Newport who all live in Boston, would go to Nantucket for Figawi-Memorial Day weekend.  My first time was 2006 and I fell in love with Nantucket.  It is so different than Newport, although a lot harder to get to.  Through the years, our Newport rentals dwindled but the Nantucket plans never did.  We usually made a plan to get there some time in the summer.  One of my Miami friends had a house that she lent to me several times so that made going much easier.  On the way home, I stopped in Providence to visit Brooke and her family and made her go to Newport at least for the day.  That has been my plan for the last 3 years..one day in Newport.  It’s hard to believe that’s it!
This year, same deal. We rented a house on Nantucket the first week of August.  No shows or pop ups for me, just a relaxing vacation on the prettiest island around. I am so excited to get there, this time with one of my Miami BFFs there at the same time.  I will be in Newport on Tuesday, August 8th. Can’t wait to check out all my favorite places.
So, I feel like I have been cheating on Newport with my beloved Nantucket.  A few years ago, I got a comment on this blog asking why I call it Summer in Newport when I am hardly there and have very little Newport content.  It caught me off guard to say the least, but I am all about authenticity and this blog was started in 2007 when I first went to Newport as a way to stay in touch.  Little did I know I would still be typing about my life 10 years later!  I secured this domain for another 5 years a month ago, so it is here to stay.
Hope you are all having a nice summer!!!!

Gallery Walls

I am all about SYMMETRY in my life.  If there is one on the left, I need one on the right.  My blue and white collection has been purchased in many sets of two for this purpose.  My bedroom has been a decorating challenge for me since I moved in.  Uneven walls and not enough space.  My original plan was to have bedside table/bookshelves built in on each side of my bed, but I was talked into taking a huge risk and moving my bed to another wall leaving room on the left side only to work with.
My first thought was no way, but my decorator Meg convinced me to move some furniture around in my condo and put the smaller antique pine dresser next to my bed as my bedside table and accessorize with pretty things.  The other suggestion was to do a gallery wall in my bedroom.  I didn’t react out loud but inside was saying to myself “not likely”.  A week later, I moved my bed to the other wall and am thinking this new plan will definitely give me more space.  Some of the furniture that needs to be moved is heavy so I need some help. But in the meantime, I have been searching out examples of gallery walls that I like.  Here are some examples:

Summer Travel Plans

S  U  M  M  E  R   2  0  1  7
My first summer trip is around the corner! I am heading up to Charleston for a trunk show with my friend Grimsley.  I haven’t been to Charleston in ages so I am so excited to visit there.  My first pit stop will be at my parent’s on Amelia Island, it’s a perfect 6 hours from Miami. Leaving on July 11th, my show will be on the 12th.

This invitation might be one of my favorites ever in the history of my business. I LOVE Dixie Designs and think their designs are fresh and adorable.  This invitation would get me out of the house showing up to a trunk show, right?
Next stop-visiting Meg at her parent’s house in North Carolina.  Always a fun time there. I haven’t seen them in a month-which seems like forever.
After that-heading to Atlanta to hit one of the last days of the Atlanta Gift Show.  I should be able to do this on Sunday and hit the road to head to my parents house but not sure about this part of my plan.  My goal is to be back in the office by Tuesday.
The next trip is up North!  I leave at the end of July for my week on Nantucket with my old Newport roommates.  So excited to get up there. I have a couple of days in Boston before and a couple in Providence on the way back.  Tuesday, August 8th I will be in Newport so I can keep my blog honest and check out all my favorite Newport spots.
Amidst all this planning, I still do not have a nailed down kitchen plan!!  The guys I want to do my kitchen are super busy and have postponed my meeting several times.  I am supposed to meet with them tomorrow so hopefully, that will work out.  If I get the plans for the cabinets nailed down this week, it still realistically means there won’t be any action until September with the way things move around here.  So much for “Kitchen Summer” which was what I was calling it. I have bought my faucet and am about to buy my sink, so that is something.
My closet…oh my goodness I had so much stuff in that closet.  Seriously, I found things I haven’t seen in years.  I packed it all up using all my Pierre Deux duffle bags and various totes that were in there I put them in my living room.  I was doing ok putting things away in the new closet when I looked for something yesterday and found two duffle bags that went unnoticed so now I have to find more room in there. Please don’t email and tell me to purge, I have been purging but there are just some things that I can’t get rid of!  I have a 4 day weekend coming up this week and it will all be spent working on my apartment putting things away and clearing things out.
No solid plans for the 4th of July yet…I used to LOVE that holiday. Every year I would buy a new outfit to go watch fireworks.  Now, it is so unbelievably hot in Miami, I usually am trying to find something to wear so I don’t melt. But that is a whole other post.
If you are in Charleston or have friends in Charleston that might want to come to my show, please reach out to me at summerinnewport@gmail.com for the address. It will be fun!
Thanks friends!

Finished closet..it’s a miracle!

TAfter an unfortunate cancellation by the closet people on Friday with my entire apartment in shambles-literally piles of clothes everywhere, they finally came today to finish up.  I think I am too nice and they didn’t think it was a big deal to cancel on me at the last minute, especially since I had to hunt them down to find out they were canceling. It’s really fun…
The problem with my closet in this old building that I live in is that there an air conditioning handler up on the left side that is bulky, loud and has water running through it.  It was always hidden inside my drop ceiling, so it wasn’t really a concern.  When I opened it up at one point with the A/C man, I realized the entire right hand side was unused and became obsessed with reclaiming that space.  I need more storage space always!
It started to look like too complicated a job until the right person came and after 3 hours of chit chat sweet talking Robert from the closet company, he decided he could not only fix the a/c handler situation but he threw in the demo of my old closet and even offered to paint-two things he previously told me they did not do.  I have to say that turn of events was exhilarating and confirmed to me that if you are nice it can get you a lot farther than being not so nice.
So, now the closet is done..it needs a quick paint touch up in a few places, but I am so excited to put the obvious things back where they belong and start the not-so-sure pile to go through.  This will for sure be a task but the thought of having a pretty, organized closet where I know where everything is will be a treat!
Here is the end result of the closet renovation:
Starting tonight to fill it up with my stuff.  Wish me luck!

Closet Update

Well, lost of activity this week in the condo!!  I emptied my closet out last weekend, literally removed every thing in there and it is all over my apartment.  Once the electrician came by, it delayed the plan by a few days, so I have been living with piles of clothes in every room-exactly what I was trying to avoid.
Anyway, Tuesday, they came to remove my old closet shelves and racks and patch the walls and smooth them out…
Wednesday, they came to paint everything white and get ready for the install…
Today they came to install the bulk of the closet.  I can’t believe it actually happening.
Tomorrow, they are coming to box in the air handler and install the shoe rack.  They need to use a saw on my balcony and I am sure that is not allowed so hopefully they are quick so we don’t get in trouble.
Now the thought of putting it all back in scares the heck out of me.  I hope everything fits!
It’s coming along…
The Kitchen plans get nailed down on Tuesday!

Mom’s Favorites

This past weekend was my Mom’s 70th birthday.  At this point, getting gifts for my parents has become sort of difficult.  They don’t really need anything and they get annoyed if I spend too much money on them.  But, for 70, I decided to do something fun for my Mom.
One of my favorite artists, Paige Smith, does commissions and her work is amazing.  She painted something a long time ago that I loved for her Grandmother, an illustration of all of her favorite things.
I decided to do this for my Mom and sent Paige a list of all her favorites.  It came out so terrific..
She was so surprised when she opened her gift..I love a good surprise!  Now I am thinking I need one for myself.  My list of favorite things is kind of long but I am planning on doing a gallery wall in my apartment and keep thinking of things that I can add to my art collection.
Check out Paige’s blog here.  If you are a Lilly Pulitzer aficionado, you will certainly recognize many of her prints. She is an amazing artist.
Happy Weekend!
